Strandings

Mackay and District Turtle Watch Association members respond when sick, injured or dead turtles are reported. Information related to the nature and possible cause of the injury is recorded. This information is sent to the Queensland Government’s StrandNet database and included in marine stranding  reports.  StrandNet records if a marine animal’s death was directly a result of human causes, such as boat strikes, so can be used to inform zoning, compliance and other management decisions.  Dugong protection areas along the Queensland coast are an example of measures that were introduced as a direct result of StrandNet data.
